You have a singer whose voice is getting buried beneath the band. You push the vocal fader up, but before the singer becomes clear enough, you begin to hear that familiar ringing sound. Push it any farther and the entire room may hear the squeal of feedback.
This is one of the most frustrating situations you can face behind a church sound system. It can feel as though you have only two choices: leave the singer too quiet or risk feedback in the middle of the service. Fortunately, those are not your only choices.
The solution is not simply finding another control to turn up. You need to improve the ratio between the singer’s voice entering the microphone and all the unwanted sound entering that same microphone. Once you understand that, the correct troubleshooting steps become much clearer.

Why Turning Up the Fader Eventually Causes Feedback
Feedback happens when sound from a loudspeaker enters a microphone, travels through the sound system, comes out of the loudspeaker again and returns to the microphone. If that loop contains enough amplification at a particular frequency, the sound continues reinforcing itself until you hear ringing or a loud squeal.
Every sound system has a limit called gain before feedback. That is simply the amount of level you can obtain from the system before the feedback loop becomes unstable. If your quiet singer needs more level than the current setup can provide, pushing the fader higher will not solve the underlying problem. You must change something within that acoustic loop.
The fastest improvements usually come from microphone technique, monitor level and physical placement—not from buying a new mixer or reaching immediately for a feedback suppressor. Shure’s guidance on feedback control similarly begins with moving the microphone closer to the source, using a directional microphone, reducing open microphones and improving the distance between microphones and loudspeakers.
1. Get the Singer Closer to the Microphone
Before changing anything on the mixer, look at how the singer is using the microphone. If the microphone is six or eight inches from the singer’s mouth, it is not primarily a mixer problem.
Ask the singer to keep the microphone close—generally an inch or two from the mouth—and sing directly into the front of it. The exact distance will vary with the singer and microphone, but the underlying principle does not change: cutting the singer-to-microphone distance gives the microphone a much stronger vocal signal.
This means you can achieve the same vocal level in the room with less amplification from the sound system. It also improves the relationship between the singer’s voice and stage wash from drums, guitar amplifiers, monitors and loudspeakers. In many cases, better microphone technique gives you more usable vocal level than a complicated EQ adjustment.
Watch for singers who begin with the microphone close during soundcheck and gradually lower it when they sing louder notes. That may work for a powerful vocalist, but a quiet singer often lowers the microphone without producing enough acoustic level to compensate. Consistency matters.
2. Set the Input Gain Correctly
Once the singer is using the microphone correctly, check the input gain—sometimes labeled gain, trim or preamp. Have the singer perform at the level they will actually use during the service. A polite soundcheck whisper will not help you set the channel for full music.
Use the channel meter or PFL/Solo function and raise the input gain until you have a healthy signal with adequate headroom for louder moments. You do not want the input clipping, but you also do not want a tiny signal entering the mixer and then compensate for it with extreme settings elsewhere.

However, there is an important distinction: moving gain from one control to another does not magically eliminate acoustic feedback. Raising the preamp can also raise that microphone in pre-fader monitor sends and change how compressors and gates respond. The goal is a properly structured signal—not simply turning the gain knob higher.
3. Find Out Whether the Feedback Is Coming From the Monitors or the Main Speakers
Before reaching for the EQ, identify which loudspeaker is completing the feedback loop. Is it the main PA facing the congregation, or the floor monitor aimed back toward the singer?
Temporarily lower or mute that singer’s monitor send during soundcheck. If you can now raise the vocal substantially in the main speakers without feedback, the monitor system is the limiting factor. If feedback remains, investigate the main PA, another monitor mix or another open microphone.
This distinction matters because the correction should usually be applied to the system causing the problem. If the singer’s floor monitor is ringing, cutting frequencies from the entire main mix may damage the sound for the congregation without fixing the actual source.
4. Reduce What the Singer Does Not Need in the Monitor
When a singer says, “I need more of me,” the natural response is to turn up the vocal in the monitor. Sometimes the better solution is to turn down the other things masking the vocal.
If the monitor is packed with drums, guitars, keyboards, tracks and several other voices, the singer’s vocal must compete with all of them. Simplify the monitor mix. Keep the elements the singer truly needs for pitch, rhythm and musical cues, then remove or lower everything else.
Also consider the overall volume on stage. A loud drum kit, guitar amplifier or keyboard monitor can force both the house mix and vocal monitors higher. You may be fighting stage volume rather than a weak vocal channel.
5. Check the Monitor and Microphone Position
Directional microphones are designed to pick up more sound from certain directions and reject sound from others. The monitor should be placed in the microphone’s area of greatest rejection whenever possible.
With a typical cardioid vocal microphone, that rejection is usually strongest directly behind the microphone, so one monitor centered in front of the singer often works well. Supercardioid and hypercardioid microphones have different rear pickup patterns, so their best monitor positions may be angled to either side. Check the manufacturer’s polar-pattern diagram instead of assuming every handheld microphone behaves the same way.
Make sure the singer is not cupping the microphone grille, pointing the microphone toward the monitor between phrases or walking in front of the main loudspeakers. Each of those actions can reduce your available gain before feedback.

6. Use EQ Carefully—and Cut the Right Place
After the microphone technique, gain structure, monitor mix and speaker placement are under control, EQ can help you gain a little more level.
During rehearsal—not during the service—slowly bring the problem vocal up until you begin to hear a frequency ring. Use an RTA or spectrum display if your mixer provides one, but confirm what you hear rather than trusting the display blindly. Apply a narrow, modest cut at the troublesome frequency, then test again.
If the feedback originates in one floor monitor, make the correction on that monitor’s output EQ when appropriate. If the feedback is unique to one microphone, a channel correction may make more sense. Avoid pulling down wide portions of the vocal spectrum, because you can quickly make the singer dull, thin or unintelligible.
EQ can improve a well-arranged system, but it cannot rescue a singer holding the microphone at waist level while standing in front of a loud monitor. Fix the large physical problems first, then use EQ for precision.
7. Be Careful With Compression
Compression can make a vocal feel more consistent by reducing louder peaks. That can be useful, but compression does not create more gain before feedback. In fact, heavy compression followed by makeup gain can raise the average level of the vocal channel and bring quieter sounds—including monitor spill and room sound—closer to the feedback threshold.
For a quiet, inconsistent singer, begin with gentle compression. Listen to what it does in the complete system and do not automatically add large amounts of makeup gain. If the singer is simply too far from the microphone, compression is not the cure.
8. Close Microphones That Are Not Being Used
Every open microphone picks up some sound from the room and stage. As the number of open microphones increases, the system generally loses available gain before feedback.
Mute unused vocal microphones and avoid leaving every microphone open throughout the service. This also reduces stage wash and can make the entire mix clearer. Just be certain that everyone who needs to speak or sing knows when their microphone will be active.
What to Do If Feedback Starts During the Service
When feedback begins in front of the congregation, your first job is to stop it—not conduct a frequency-analysis experiment while everyone covers their ears.
- Lower the offending vocal channel or monitor send immediately.
- Identify the microphone and loudspeaker involved.
- Check whether the singer moved the microphone or walked into a problem area.
- Restore level gradually once the loop is under control.
- Investigate the underlying cause during rehearsal.
Do not sweep a boosted EQ band through the system during a service while searching for the frequency. That can make the feedback dramatically worse. Make the room safe and comfortable first, then diagnose methodically later.
